I've never shared this with anyone...

I've never shared this with anyone but after all these decades it's time. I grew up poor, my mother worked hard and played hard – often leaving me alone for days on end. By the time I was ten I had a paper route delivering to all areas of my tiny town. One year, Wednesday before Thanksgiving I was making my rounds in “Shanty Town,” consisting ten or so tar paper shackies with no heat, electric or plumbing, occupied by migrant workers picking crops. I threw my newspaper on the broken wooden steps when the occupant Mr. Jones yell at me as I peddled off.

“Boy, come back here!” I was scared, but came back. “Whatcha doin for supper tomorrow,” he asked?

My mother had been gone for two days and I know it was going to be mac and cheese out of a box for my Thanksgiving.

“We be eaten at 3:00 o'clock, you be here.” He said. I don't know to this day how he knew I was alone for Thanksgiving – somehow, he did.

I came to the little hovel on Thanksgiving with a can of tuna fish for a gift that's all I had to offer. Mrs. Jones from Alabama, fixed ham hocks and greens on a little kerosene stove, bread and milk with brown sugar on top for desert and lukewarm ice tea. For you see, they had no refrigerator.

The place was warm and with an odor of kerosene as we gathered around the little table. He put out his big callused hand and took mine in his. With all of us holding hands, Mr. Jones bowed his head and prayed to God how thankful and blessed he was for his family and work at this time of year. Mrs. Jones made a big fuss over making sure I was full and hugged me for sharing their special Thanksgiving meal.

The Monday after, I arrived to find “Shanty Town” deserted all had moved on to the next harvest. But to this day, as I do every Thanksgiving, remembering the Jones sharing their meager Thanksgiving with a little poor white boy.

Happy Thanksgiving to you, your family and friends on this special day of mine.

Now this isn't a big beach, in fact it's only about 100 yds. long. But most of the time it's deserted. For those of you just itching and I mean “itching” for clothing optional here's an opportunity to take a chance within the National Park. I suggest you do it late in the day after the Park Rangers are off duty and no patrol boats or tourists will happen upon you. But remember the noseeums start invading the beaches around sunset. For your “naked” frolic I suggest you definitely stay in the water. Have fun!

Directions – Take the North Shore Road about two miles or so and you will come to a speed bump with a couple of parking spots on the right. Opposite is a set of wooden stairs leading down to the beach. This is not a very good snorkeling beach but a great place to sit, read and ponder life.

Where are you?

Jumbie Beach!

Well the beginning of the holiday season is definitely upon up; Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, Christmas, New Years. You poor people in the Northeast are in for one “Helluva” Winter! So, being the shameless marketing person I am, you got one final chance to get a fantastic post IRMA deal.

This is a very special time of the year on St. John with lots of activities and holiday festivities. If you've never had the experience – it is a one in a lifetime opportunity at an incredible price.

See for some reason which I believe is lack of direct flights from Boston, New York, Philadelphia and Washington until mid – December it's killing my rentals for Christmas weeks at both villas. Here's an offer you can't refuse (or at least if you're smart you won't refuse it).

For Christmas week at Sopra Mare December 22nd-29th I'll give you instead of seven nights TEN FOR THE PRICE OF CHRISTMAS WEEK! With the addition of nights December 19,20,21. When you calculate the price/night with these bonus nights it's not a whole lot more than my summer rate and less than my Winter High Season Rate/Night!

At Bordo Mare, I'll give you four additional nights with Christmas week of December 22nd-29th! The nights of December 18,19,20,21 that's a total of ELEVEN NIGHTS FOR THE COST OF SEVEN! Again, it's not a whole lot more than my summer rate and definitely than my Winter High Season Rate/Night!

Sorry, no other discounts apply for these specials and each villa includes up to four guests. So, email: info@mulleysstjohnvillas.com and let's discuss.

Hope you liked the information provided and maybe it’ll add to your St. John vacation experience. Don't forget you can connect with me at: Mulley's St. John Villas on Facebook.

Have a great November and I’ll “Leave The Lite On For You” at your new island home – Bordo Mare or Sopra Mare.
